Ag Marketplace

Happy Jack Software was contracted in 2020 to develop a platform to simplify the way agricultural food products are bought and sold, bridging the gap between producers and consumers. By leveraging advanced technology, the goal was to create a marketplace where farmers/ranchers and consumers could connect directly, eliminating barriers and providing a streamlined, user-friendly experience for all parties involved.

From a development perspective, we designed the system to solve real-world problems faced by farmers and consumers alike. Producers often struggle with marketing, compliance, and finding cost-effective outlets, while consumers—both personal and professional—need a trusted and efficient way to source high-quality local food. Our solution integrated tools for compliance, secure transactions, and scalable outreach, making the process faster, safer, and more reliable.

To ensure transparency and trust, we incorporated blockchain technology, creating a secure foundation for every transaction. The platform included a robust rating system to hold producers accountable and builds consumer confidence. One of the standout features is our ability to handle meat shares—a process that’s often overlooked by existing marketplaces. We also prioritized educational components, helping consumers understand the benefits and logistics of practices like meat sharing.

As software developers, our focus was on creating a reliable, efficient, and innovative platform that empowers producers and consumers alike, delivering a modern solution for connecting farm-fresh food to families and businesses.

Sale Barn Efficiency

Happy Jack Software was contracted in 2013 to convert previous digital and paper processes across multiple livestock agencies into a singular web-based application. One of the key tasks was streamlining and automating the processes at sale barns—rural hubs where livestock producers and buyers gather to trade cattle, swine, goats, horses, sheep, and other animals. Before partnering with us, the organization spent two years evaluating and beta testing various software solutions for sale barns. Unfortunately, none of these solutions succeeded because the software developers had not visited a sale barn to understand its workflow, instead expecting users to adapt their processes to fit the software.

To ensure the success of this project, HJS conducted several visits to sale barns to observe their unique workflows firsthand. Our team spent multiple days watching sales, asking questions, and gaining a deep understanding of what the application’s users truly needed. Despite the unfamiliar domain, our user-centric approach during the specification gathering, design, and implementation (DDI) phases allowed us to create a solution tailored to the users’ workflows.

Before HJS automated the sale barn process, tallying reports involved combing through handwritten pen and brand tally cards, a task that took 2-3 hours after each sale. With the new system, uses can now enter pen data in real time, enabling the generation of buyer forms on demand and the creation of sale reports at any point during or after the sale. Additionally, sale totals are summarized and seamlessly integrated into the organization’s accounting system, improving efficiency and accuracy.
